Cynthia Futter has been a practicing lawyer for more than 30 years. Since beginning her law practice and then becoming a partner in two highly acclaimed international firms (www.milbank.com and www.manatt.com), Ms. Futter’s practice has consisted of advising entrepreneurs, corporations and investors and their boards of directors as to mergers and acquisition opportunities and other reorganization, restructuring or equity solutions. She has also represented financial institutions and equity funds in investing in, restructuring or reorganizing assets or loans held in portfolios or involving foreign assets. Ms. Futter formerly served as of counsel to CKR Law, an international law firm (www.CKRLaw.com), where she focused on coal mining and other bankruptcies and various acquisitions. Currently, Ms. Futter’s legal practice consists of representing a group of entrepreneurs in their real estate, banking, portfolio and investment activities. In addition, she coordinates clients’ various litigation matters with specialty litigation, employment or tax counsel.

Ms. Futter was admitted to the United States Supreme Court Bar in December 1995.
Ms. Futter has also developed an extensive business consulting practice involving multi-constituent scenarios involving real estate, corporate and start up projects. Drawing on business school training, many years of successful business ownership, and crisis management and legal restructuring and insolvency experience in a wide range of business environments, Ms. Futter advises clients on various business and strategic issues enabling them to bring clarity and structure to the complex challenges they face.
Prior to 2007, Ms. Futter was a managing director and president of The Summit Alliance, a specialty investment bank and legal services firm, where she headed the Financial Strategy and Restructuring Group. Ms. Futter was also the President of Summit Capital Partners, an affiliated private debt and equity fund. In that capacity, Ms. Futter focused on placing and finding capital for troubled enterprises using both institutional and private investors.
Ms. Futter has taught insolvency law at the University of California at Los Angeles, and has been a lecturer and author on corporate restructuring and reorganization and mergers and acquisitions for institutions such as the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Financial Lawyers Conference, the State Bar of California, the Los Angeles Superior Court Judicial College, Fulcrum Seminars, the UCLA Business Bankruptcy Institute, the State Bar Annual Convention, and the Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles.
In addition, Ms. Futter has authored a number of articles on a variety of subjects related to restructuring and crisis or financial management, including “What to Expect From Hedge Funds Today and in the Future: An Overview and Insolvency Perspective,” published in the California Bankruptcy Journal and hailed as one of the best restructuring articles of 2007, “The Troubled Company: Does One Strategy Fit All?” published by Fulcrum, and along with Anne Wells, “Even More Fees for Bankruptcy Lawyers,” published in the National Law Journal. Ms. Futter is a multi-year recipient of the prestigious AV Pre-eminent Peer Ranking Award from attorneys and the judiciary and and Martindale-Hubbell. These reflect the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards submitted through the confidential opinions of members and the judiciary. In 2017, Ms. Futter participated as the spotlighted lawyer for Top Lawyers: The Secrets to their Success, published by Worldwide Publishing and focusing on over 400 lawyers nationwide.
Ms. Futter has participated with a number of professional or international business or legal organizations including The Financial Lawyers Conference, The Los Angeles World Affairs Council, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Cato Institute, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the International Bar Association, INSOL International, the American Society of International Law, Town Hall Los Angeles, and the Southern California Leadership Network.
Ms. Futter has served on a number of corporate boards or community organizations including for The American Cancer Society Regional Counsel and Regional Business Council, The Watts Foundation Community Trust, The Visiting Nurse Association of Los Angeles, Inc., the California Democratic Party Finance Council and Delegate Selection Committee, the Lawyers Advisory Council of the Constitutional Rights Foundation, the Leadership LA Advisory Board, and the Los Angeles Business Council. In addition, Ms. Futter funds or gifts a number of charities, primarily involving children and families in need, and has represented a number of clients in pro bono matters involving bankruptcy and other personal issues.
Ms. Futter received her undergraduate degree in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations from the University of Southern California in 1980. She graduated magna cum laude and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Language Honor Society, the Blackstonian Law Society, Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Society and Alpha Lambda Delta National Freshman Honor Society. Ms. Futter obtained her law degree from the University of Southern California in 1983, where she graduated Order of the Coif and served as a member or editor of the Southern California Law Review, the USC Computer Law Journal and the USC Tax Planning Journal. She is also a member of Pi Alpha Delta, the International Law Honor Society. After law school, Ms. Futter served as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert J. Kelleher, United States District Court Judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
After being a lawyer for many years, in order to better understand her clients’ business challenges, Ms. Futter went back to school and graduated from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles. Because of her interest in international law and business, Ms. Futter is currently working on certificated programs in International Business from Georgetown University and a certificated MM in International Business Law from Universite catholique de Louvain.
